HiFi Separates - Buyers GuideIntroduction
1. Turntable Bring your old record collection back to life with a wide selection of turntables. For the easiest way to get into vinyl, choose a turntable with a built-in amplifier which can be connected to any hi-fi system with an auxiliary input. 2. Tuner For anyone serious about their radio listening, a separate tuner alongside an amplifier will offer far better quality than an all-in-one system. Tuners incorporating RDS (Radio Data System) allow information such as station names to be displayed on the tuner display and also allows automatic retuning - handy if your area suffers from occassional weak FM signals. 3. Cassette Decks For those of you with a back catalogue of cassettes and those who still listen to tapes in the car, a high quality casette separate is just the ticket to ensure th best quality is gained from this analogue source. 4. CD Players A separate CD Player remains th eonly solution to ensure you get the best out of CD music. Most players will allow playback of CDRs and CDRWs as well as CDs. CD Changers enable up to 300 CDs to be stored inside the unit so you don't have to constantly change discs. Perfect for random play over several albums - especially at a party! 5. CD Recorders If you want to create your own CD compilations or nake copies of your CDs to use in the car, for instance, there is no simpler way than with a separate CD Recorder. A true Audio CDR deck will result in near perfect copies of the original. Step-up models feature both a CD Recorder and CD Player in one to make disc-to-disc recording even easier (n.b. copying of copyrighted material is illegal) 6. Minidisc Players Minidisc allows simple recording in a digital format. This means little loss in sound quality, recordings stay clear as the day they were made and you can re-record over them up to a million times without loss of quality. Minidisc long play allows up to 320 minutes of music on one disc and when playing back, there is the benefit of instant track access as well as track name display. NetMD - using a USB connection cable and OpenMG Jukebox software, this feature allows the high speed digital recording of music from PC to Minidisc. Download MP3 music from the web, edit on your PC an dthen record to Minidisc (n.b. copying of copyrighted music is illegal) 7. Amplifier The hub of any separates system. Selecting a good amplifier will ensure great sounding music and the ability to add to the system in the future. Check the number of inputs available on your chosen amplifier as this is the amount of components that can be added to it. You should consider not only what you currently own, but what you might purchase later. If you want to listen to vinyl through your amplifier, check that it has "phono" input. 8. Speakers Essential to the quality of any separtaes system, speakers shoul be chosen to compliment both the amplifier being used and the size of the room they are to be used in. Bookshelf speakers are ideal fro smaller rooms, however if your music tastes are for more bass-driven music, or if you are setting your system up in a larger room (over 25m squared) then floorstanders should be considered. Some speakers have 2 sets of terminals to allow for two sets of speaker cable to be used in linking to your amplifier. This process is called bi-wiring and it means that the amplifier will drive the bass and treble drivers independantly of one another, resulting in more accurate reproduction of sound.
